"Gooselea" is one of three terraced dwellings erected before 1853 (the date of the first Ordnance Survey Map) and their origins are discussed in the entry for Corner Cottage (click here for access to that entry).

It as remembered by George Wainwright who lived once at Corner Cottage and said … "There was a real character who lived next door but one to my grandma, a strange old lady called Mrs Wilks. She always wore a black frock with a lace collar and a white kerchief edged with lace on her head. I'm perfectly certain that I was once told that she had worked for the Royal Family as a bed-maker. She used to say that she ate ground nutmegs to keep herself healthy. Whether they did have this effect or not I don't know, but she persevered with them, grinding them up, soaking them in water, then dripping them. Horrible! As a lad I used to go round to see her and to have a natter for half an hour, but fortunately I never had to taste her nutmegs!"
