Packhorse Bridge

This ancient crossing over the Cockhill Beck is a "listed" structure and is described thus in the Conservation Area document published by Harrogate Council . . .
"The Packhorse Bridge over Cockhill Beck is also an Ancient Monument and is probably seventeenth century. It is a narrow single span arch, constructed in gritstone with plain parapets, the coping stones are tied by iron staples set in lead."
As the name of such bridges implies, this crossing would once have allowed passage over the beck by horses or mules carrying loads in panniers strapped to their sides the passing of which was facilitated by the low side walls.
The bridge continues to provide a useful footpath over the beck and avoiding the longer roadside route from Hollins Lane to the Village Green.
