Nutshell Cottages (site of)
Here, on what it is now part of the front garden of "Longside", once stood a pair of cottages known as "Nutshell Cottages" demolished in 1974. Their appearance is preserved in this photograph taken shortly before their demise as part of the construction of "Longside" which replaced them.

On the rather indistinct Ordnance Survey Map of 1853 they seem be drawn as abutting on the parish stables a remnant of which can be seen to the right of the photograph. The style and standard of construction seem consistent with the early 19th or even late 18th centuries. Another partial view is found in a further photograph of late Victorian/Edwardian times. This is a view of Church Lane taken from the vicinity of the church lych-gate and the left-hand portion of the cottages is visible (complete with a grazing chicken!).

The photo' illustrates the rather modest quality of the cottages compared with their more newly built neighbours on the south!
