Born in Hampsthwaite in 1889, the son of William and Priscilla Appleby of Vale Terrace, Hampsthwaite, he enlisted at Keighley with a service number 205104 in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment.
He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in France in April, 1918, but was killed by machine gun fire in October of that year. He left a widow, Eva, and two sons at the family home, Quarry Cottage, Menston-in-Wharfedale.
He is buried in ll.C.2. Wellington Cemetary, Rieux-en Cambresis, France.
